Madrid bid to stage 2020 Olympics

Six cities have officially lodged bids to host the 2020 Olympic Games:
Baku, Doha, Istanbul, Madrid, Rome and Tokyo, according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Friday 2sd, 2011.
The bids' deadline ran out at midnight on Thursday, with the crunch IOC vote on the host city for 2020 scheduled to be held on September 7, 2013, in Buenos Aires....

Madrid is planning to bid to host the 2020 summer Olympic Games, the city's mayor said, in what would be a third attempt after failed efforts to secure the 2012 and 2016 editions.
The backing of both Ruiz-Gallardon's conservative Partido Popular PP.L and the Partido Socialista Obrero Espanol PSOE.L, which rules at national level, means the vote would be a formality.
"Madrid has finished an extremely high percentage of the infrastructure needed for the organisation of the Olympics and Paralympics and can count on the experience of the previous two bids and the recognition of the Olympic family," Gallardon said....
Madrid to have its own Spanish "Walk of Fame"

Forget Hollywood, soon you will be able to visit the Spanish Walk of Fame in the capital city of Madrid where Marilyn Monroe's name won't appear but Sarah Montiel's will.. and instead of Paul Newman you will find Antonio Banderas.
The project is in honor of the Spanish Film Academy's 25th anniversary and was sponsered by the State Lottery and Bets department.
25 famous Spaniards (one per year celebrated) will receive a star designed by Oscar Mariné made of granite, marble and steel. The current idea is to later expand this by 1 or 2 stars every year.
First honored are:
Pedro Almodóvar, Alejandro Amenábar, Juan Antonio Bardem, Luis García Berlanga, Luis Buñuel, Jose Luis Garci, Pilar Miró, Carlos Saura y Fernando Trueba.
Imperio Argentina, Penélope Cruz, Carmen Maura, Sara Montiel, Emma Penella, Amparo Rivelles, Carmen Sevilla y Concha Velasco.
Antonio Banderas, Javier Bardem, Fernando Fernán Gómez, Pepe Isbert, Alfredo Landa, Toni Leblanc, Paco Rabal y Fernando Rey.

This fourteenth annual photography festival will offer a program of 70 expositions – 21 in the official Selection, 6 in openPHoto, 11 in other halls, and 32 as part of the off Festival (Festival off) – in 61 locations, among them museums, galleries, art centers, and exhibition spaces.
370 artists and creators, of 55 nationalities, will participate.
Prince Charles, Camilla to visit Spain end of March

PRINCE Charles and his wife Camilla will make their first official visit to Spain as a couple towards the end of March, the leading daily El Pais said on Monday.
The British royals planned to stay for about three days, visiting Madrid and the southern city of Seville, but there were no exact dates yet, the paper said, without identifying a source.
Prince Charles and his wife would meet with King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, Prince Felipe and his wife Princess Letizia, Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and Madrid Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon, the paper said....

A strike by Metro workers paralyzed traffic for the third day in Madrid on Wednesday.
Workers were due to vote this morning on extending the three-day stoppage, that has affected 2 million commuters and had far more impact than a nationwide civil servants' strike called earlier this month.
