Museo del Ferrocarril

The Railway Museum in Madrid displays one of the more complete collections of historic railway equipment of Europe.

This museum is located at the old railway station "las Delicias" inaugurated in 1880 by the king Alfonso XII. In 1980 was declared "Historical Monument", then BIC (Building of Cultural Interest) and December 19, 1984 opened its doors as the Railway Museum.

The RENFE Museum is in the former Delicias station, Madrid - a very appropriate venue. Despite modest size (compared to the British railway museum in York or the French one in Mulhouse), it is an excellent museum for the railway enthusiast, and thankfully traditional in display concept. It is good for photography (though lighting can be a problem) and very few visitors to get in the way (apart from a few parties of schoolchildren and pensioners). But the lack of visitors is a shame because it is a very interesting museum with good exhibits well spaced out. Like the aircraft museum in Madrid, this should be better promoted, especially to railway enthusiasts in the UK, as it is a fine - but under utilised - asset to Spain.
