Casón del Buen Retiro

The Casón del Buen Retiro is one of only two buildings that have survived the destruction of the Palacio del Buen Retiro, which takes its name, in Madrid (Spain). It is one of the buildings that make up the Prado Museum, and for several decades housed the collection of paintings of the nineteenth century, some 3,000 paintings, as well as Picasso's Guernica. This famous painting was moved to the Reina Sofia Museum in 1992, and the Casón, after years of work, will be reopened as a center for studies in 2008, while the collections of the century are being relocated to the headquarters of the Prado, with the extension of Rafael Moneo.

The ultimate use of the building will be as a library and study center for a "Campus Prado" to contribute to research and training of experts in art. It housed the departments of documentation, archives, library and maintenance of the Prado Museum.
